Fellowship Profiles

The Arts Commission recognizes the achievements of outstanding Oregon artists through annual Individual Artist Fellowship grants. Fellowship Profiles introduce featured artists and provide a description of their work.

Intricate, symmetrical gridwork patterns; precise dots of paint in a penciled grid. Hand-knit sweaters folded neatly on shelves, wooden tables, or in glass topped cabinets.

Ralph Pugay makes modestly-scaled paintings of humans in situations that are often as absurd (and often quite funny) as they are mundane.

2014 Fellowship Recipient

The subjects of Samantha Wall’s finely wrought portraits in charcoal and graphite are exclusively women. Some aspects, most often the face, are rendered in sharp, nearly photographic detail while others are blended into the background.

2013 Fellowship Recipient

Evan P. Schneider still can’t believe his luck. In 2005, he started what he describes as “a literary magazine for bicyclists” called Boneshaker: A Bicycling Almanac.

2013 Fellowship Recipient

Poet, writer, musician and teacher Kirsten Rian was, by her own admission, a shy kid growing up in Portland who “interpreted and reinterpreted my world through writing poems and writing stories, writing songs, singing and playing piano.”

2013 Fellowship Recipient

“Have flute, will travel” could be the moniker for Molly Barth, one of the most versatile, top-tier flutists in the nation. Though waifish in stature, Barth has a passion for performing contemporary music that practically knows no bounds.
