The Oregon Arts Commission is seeking nominations of individuals or organizations to receive Oregon’s 2006 Governor’s Arts Awards.
"The arts are essential for our minds and spirit. They're not a luxury - they are a necessity if we are to maintain the spirit of Oregon and our high quality of life. So I look forward to continuing the Governor’s Arts Awards to recognize Oregonians and Oregon artists who are strengthening Oregon’s communities and economy through their work in the arts, ” said Governor Ted Kulongoski, advising the Arts Commission.
“These awards give official recognition to those whose work on behalf of the arts has significantly contributed to the growth and development of the cultural life of Oregon. Now, more than ever, is the time to call public attention to the citizens whose extraordinary efforts give back to the community and help the arts thrive,” said Christine D’Arcy, director of the Oregon Arts Commission.
Nominations may be made in the following categories: artist, arts organization, arts patron, foundation, corporate or business support of the arts, and arts education. In addition, the Ron Schmidt Award recognizes the contributions made by a public figure who has shown exceptional leadership in the arts.
Four to six awards are made annually. Recipients are selected on the basis of their dedication to the advancement of the arts in Oregon, the length of their commitment to the statewide arts community, the highest level of artistic contribution, and the extent of their reputation in the county, state and nation.
To nominate an individual or organization, send a one-page letter describing the nominee’s qualifications to the Oregon Arts Commission, 775 Summer Street NE, Salem, Oregon 97301-1284, or by e-mail to oregon.artscomm@state.or.us. The deadline for nominations is May 1, 2006.

The Oregon Arts Commission believes that the arts and culture are touchstones of community and civic life and that it is essential to preserve, stabilize and develop their central role in Oregon. The Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine Commissioners, appointed by the Governor, determine arts needs and
establish policies for public support of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Economic and Community Development Department in 1993 in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social, economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities. In 2003, the Oregon Legislature moved the operations of the Oregon Cultural Trust to the Arts Commission, streamlining operations and making use of the Commission’s expertise in grantmaking, arts and cultural information and community cultural development. More information about the Oregon Arts Commission is available at www.oregonartscommission.org.
The Arts Commission is supported with General Funds appropriated by the Oregon Legislature, federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and funds from the Oregon Cultural Trust.
