Governor John A. Kitzhaber, MD, issued the following statement and public service announcement today encouraging Oregonians to make a year-end contribution to the Oregon Cultural Trust.
Each year thousands of Oregonians contribute to programs for children, for people in need, and to organizations that provide critical services across our state. This month, for the first time, we have an opportunity to give to a cause that will give back to us all ... the Oregon Cultural Trust.
Hi, I’m Governor John Kitzhaber.
Arts, culture and heritage are some of the few things in society that transcend geography, economics, age, education and gender. Culture is the essence of community and a strong thread in the fabric of Oregon’s quality of life. A gift to the arts and culture in Oregon will enrich the lives of our children, help attract new jobs, bring visitors to our state, and invest in our quality of life.
The Cultural Trust is a statewide strategy to guide public investment in Oregon’s arts, heritage and humanities. It can only succeed if Oregonians step forward. If you have made a donation to one or more non-profits that support arts and culture, your equal donation to the Cultural Trust will be returned to you dollar for dollar through a state tax credit. These donations must be made by December 31st.
I urge you all to join me in giving the gift that grows. Visit the Cultural Trust at www.culturaltrust.org or call 503-986-1530.
The Oregon Arts Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine Commissioners, appointed by the Governor, determine arts needs and establish policies for public support of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department in 1993, in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social, economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities.
