Landscapes Of Gary Michael Exhibited In Governor’s Office In Salem

An exhibition of landscape paintings by Milwaukie artist Gary Michael is on display in the Governor’s Office in the State Capitol in Salem through March 28, 2003. Organized by the Oregon Arts Commission, the show is part of the Art in the Governor’s Office program, which showcases the work of living Oregon artists.

A native Oregonian, Gary Michael studied art and architecture at the University of Oregon and Yale University where he received an M.Arch. degree. His artwork can be seen at the Attic Gallery in Portland and the Earthworks Galleries on the Coast. A board member of the Arts Action Alliance of Clackamas County, he is involved in promoting arts and culture in his community.

Michael’s exhibit in the Governor’s Office represents the first showing of a recently completed suite of five panoramic Oregon landscape drawings. The works are pastel on wood, each measuring 24” x 48”, and capture the artist’s dynamic talent for color and light. Says Michael, “I try to communicate to the viewer of my work the beauty and sense of special places caught in light in a unique moment in time.”

The Art in the Governor’s Office Program honors selected artists in Oregon with exhibitions in the reception area of the Governor’s Office in the State Capitol. Only professional, living Oregon artists are considered and an exhibit in the Governor’s office is considered a special honor.

The Oregon Arts Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine Commissioners, appointed by the Governor, determine arts needs and establish policies for public support of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department in 1993, in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social, economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities.
