The Oregon Arts Commission requests qualifications from artists for the design and creation of an interactive web-based “recognition system” for Portland State University’s Walk of the Heroines Percent for Art Project. The Walk of the Heroines: A Place in the City to Honor Women is an innovative park designed to give artistic recognition to women’s vital contributions to our society and to daily life. The project realizes a vision—that of a special place to honor the women who have illuminated our lives.
The “recognition system” will offer historical information, images and resources pertaining to great women heroines both historical and contemporary. It will be accessed by visitors to the park via a touch screen computer monitor, and by a virtual-community as a web site.
Located at the juncture of Portland State University and the South Park Blocks, the Walk of the Heroines combines art, gardens, text, and a vibrant community space. Designed to be functional and beautiful, it will offer both areas of quiet contemplation and more active spaces, including a centrally located stage, which may become a site for concerts, ceremonies, rallies, and speakouts.
An art selection panel, composed of arts professionals as well as university and community representatives, seeks qualifications from Oregon artists and designers with a proven ability to create highly functional web sites that are well designed and aesthetically engaging.
Artists’ qualifications will be accepted until June 6, 2003. The RFQ and application procedures are available at: http://www.oregonartscommission.org/public-art.

The State Legislature passed Oregon’s Percent for Art law in 1975, in recognition of the need to encourage the work of Oregon artists and other artists nationally, enhance and preserve Oregon’s quality of life, and to provide artistic enrichment for Oregon citizens and visitors. The Law sets aside 1% of the direct construction funds for new or remodeled state facilities for the commissioning and acquisition of public art.
