Oregon Arts Commission Seeks Proposals For Arts Education

The Oregon Arts Commission has announced an October 20, 2004 application deadline for Arts Education Grants, which will support teaching and learning in and about the arts in K-12 schools and communities.

The discretionary Oregon Arts Education Grants intend to support a range of arts education activities that strengthen and integrate the arts into school curriculum and community life. Activities may include:

  • Cooperation and networking among teachers, artists, students and communities to make the arts an integral part of learning;
  • Assistance to artists and arts organizations to work with schools and the community to develop and implement substantive arts education programs for teachers and students;
  • Support for and participation in activities that promote advocacy and awareness of arts education;
  • Serving as a clearinghouse of information about programs, services and issues in arts education;
  • Support for quality research and assessment in arts education;
  • Development and support of arts education institutes, conferences and workshops.
  • Reinforcing the delivery of arts education services to communities and regions of Oregon.

"Arts programs can have a powerful impact on the lives of children and students. The Oregon Arts Commission has a strong commitment to arts education and to strengthening the relationships between schools, teachers and arts and cultural organizations. This program will help strengthen Oregon's education efforts through the arts," said Christine D'Arcy, Executive Director of the Oregon Arts Commission and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

The Arts Education grants are available to Oregon arts organizations as well as local arts or community service organizations.

Applications must be received by October 20, 2004. (This is not a postmark deadline.) Grant requests must be for activities or projects occurring November 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005. Request the guidelines and application from the Oregon Arts Commission office, 775 Summer Street NE, Salem, Oregon 97301-1284, (503) 986-0082. Guidelines may be retrieved online http://www.oregonartscommission.org

The Oregon Arts Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine Commissioners, appointed by the Governor, determine arts needs and establish policies for public support of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Economic and Community Development Department in 1993 in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social, economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities.
