You are here: Public News > Oregon Arts Commission Announces First Arts Recognition Grants
Ethos, Inc.'s Music Mobile takes music education directly to students and provides music education to underserved youth. Ethos received Arts Build Communities grant funds to support the effort.
The Oregon Arts Commission has announced 41 awards in its new Arts Recognition
Grant program, acknowledging the strengths of Oregon arts organizations with
a record of excellence in programming, service and organizational capacity.
These awards serve as a visible indication of Arts Commission support and will
assist in raising an organization's profile and in leveraging other funds and
resources. The program brings recognition to the many arts organizations in
Oregon which have not received funding from the Commission due to reductions
in public funding.
"Statewide recognition of high quality arts programs can reinforce efforts
underway by arts groups to increase resources, stabilize programs and start
new initiatives. We realize that demand for the Arts Commission's support has
increased as our state resources have lessened, and we view the new Recognition
Grants as a way to add the Commission's 'seal of approval' to Oregon's strong
and vibrant arts groups that we are not able to support at a higher financial
level," said Christine D'Arcy, Executive Director of the Arts Commission.
The Arts Commission offered a single opportunity for arts groups to seek Arts
Recognition funding this year. In FY2006, the Commission will offer two deadlines:
September 1, 2005 and January 16, 2006. More information on all of the Arts
Commission's grant programs and awards is available online at www.oregonartscommission.org.

The Oregon Arts Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through
its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine Commissioners, appointed
by the Governor, determine arts needs and establish policies for public support
of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Economic Development Department
in 1993, in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social,
economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities. In 2003, the Oregon Legislature
moved the operations of the Oregon Cultural Trust to the Arts Commission, streamlining
operations and making use of the Commission's expertise in grantmaking, arts
and cultural information and community cultural development.
