Laurel MacMillan Joins Oregon Arts Commission Staff As Community Development Coordinator
Brings community development experience to the Commission
The Oregon Arts Commission has appointed Laurel Schweitzer MacMillan of Portland as its new Community Development Coordinator.
MacMillan brings educational background in the arts and five years of community and economic development experience to the Arts Commission. Most recently she was a Senior Project Manager for the Portland Development Commission, where she assisted businesses through their Business Retention and Expansion program. She also worked for the City of Gresham as an Economic Development Coordinator. MacMillan was in the in the University of Oregon's Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) AmeriCorps program, where she helped the community of Banks, Oregon build capacity through grassroots community development efforts. She received her undergraduate degree in art history and historic preservation from the University of Oregon. In addition to her experience in community development, MacMillan has been an active volunteer with several arts and historic preservation non-profit groups.
Christine D'Arcy, Executive Director of the Arts Commission and the Cultural Trust, said, "This is one of the Commission's most important positions because it focuses on the important connections between art, culture and community issues across Oregon. Laurel's experiences in different Oregon communities will strengthen our work with local and regional arts councils and our community arts development work across the state."
