The Oregon Arts Commission will host the sixth in a series of forums in its Listening Tour throughout Oregon with an Arts Town Hall meeting in Medford on Thursday, November 17, 2005. Arts Council of Southern Oregon, the regional arts council providing leadership and arts services in Jackson and Josephine counties, will co-sponsor the meeting, to which artists, arts supporters, advocates and elected officials are invited to participate. The forum will be held from 3:00 – 4:30 pm at The Central Library, 205 South Medford. Beverages will be provided.

“The Arts Commission wants to hear first-hand about the successes achieved by arts groups, as well as the challenges that exist. We are inviting the area arts community to talk with us about their accomplishments, any barriers to success, and other issues they feel need attention. We also want to hear from arts supporters on what value they credit the arts bringing to their communities, ” said Christine D’Arcy, Executive Director of the Arts Commission. The forum is intended to solicit ideas from the art and culture community and the general public to help the Commission develop policies that strengthen the arts across Oregon. “As we plan for the future, we are reaching out to Oregon’s arts stakeholders for ideas and advice,” said D’Arcy.

The Oregon Arts Commission believes that the arts and culture are touchstones of community and civic life and that it is essential to preserve, stabilize and develop their central role in Oregon. The Commission provides leadership, funding and arts programs through its grants, special initiatives and services. Nine Commissioners, appointed by the Governor, determine arts needs and

establish policies for public support of the arts. The Arts Commission became part of the Economic and Community Development Department in 1993 in recognition of the expanding role the arts play in the broader social, economic and educational arenas of Oregon communities. In 2003, the Oregon Legislature moved the operations of the Oregon Cultural Trust to the Arts Commission, streamlining operations and making use of the Commission’s expertise in grantmaking, arts and cultural information and community cultural development. More information about the Oregon Arts Commission is available at www.oregonartscommission.org.

The Arts Commission is supported with General Funds appropriated by the Oregon Legislature, federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and funds from the Oregon Cultural Trust.
