Sustaining Oregon's Arts: A Capacity Building Initiative
Since 2008, the Arts Commission has undertaken work to build the capacity of arts organizations and creative endeavors in Oregon. Launched in October 2009, the capacity building efforts are designed to reach both staff and board of Oregon's more than 100 professionally-staffed arts non-profits.
The statewide arts technical assistance program responds to issues raised in an arts organization self-assessment process undertaken in 2008. The findings of the study, involving more than 100 arts groups and released in Fall 2008, indicated that large and small arts organizations in Oregon need more organizational depth in the areas of sustainable revenue development, leadership capacity (board and staff, and succession planning), adaptive capacity (the ability to perform well in rapidly changing conditions) and technical capacity.
Services to arts organizations include face to face trainings with national presenters, webinars on a variety of topics and a new series of regional Leadership Exchanges for board and staff to share information and learn about new models and best practices.
The next statewide Arts Summit, which will include capacity building components will be held in the Portland area on October 7, 2010.
